TV Review: The Orville 2×07

 Episode Title: Deflectors  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7826048/
Original Airdate: February 14, 2019 (Watched later via Hulu)
Grade: C

Notable Guest Stars/Directors:

Kevin Daniels (Locar) –  While I don’t recognize him from anything, he is known for his role on Modern Family.  He does a good job here.
Bruce Willis (The Plant) – Bruce Willis is pretty well known, so I don’t think I need to reference what he is been in.

Notable Quotes:

Lt. Talla Keyali: Locar didn’t hurt you. He didn’t hurt anyone. All he wanted was love. And yet because of you… his life is over. Except for no reason other than your own prejudice. So as far as I am concerned, you can go straight to Hell.

SPOILERS BELOW

Interesting how they have an episode about relationships of various kinds that aired on Valentine’s Day.  The episode deals with two specific relationships.  The first is Kelly & Cassius, the later is Locar and Talla.

So I understand that Kelly/Ed is most likely end-game, and frankly that is what I want, but I feel they are throwing Cassius out too early.  He deserved better as a character.    Kelly doesn’t act at all mature in this situation and they try to make Cassius to be a stalker dude.  Although I will admit the Bruce WIllis plant was a bit much.

On the other hand, Poor Talla.  Locar at first seems a genuinely good guy, and in the end he’s not a bad guy, but he loses a little of his status with how he does things.  Klyden on the other hand loses even more points. I haven’t particularly liked Klyden since the whole divorce episode, but then the Moclans in general irritate me (as they are probably written to do, since Orville keeps putting them as the focus of social commentary.

Pros:

  • Talla is fast becoming one of my favorite characters.
  • Diversity in sexual orientation

Cons:

  • Why is Moclus always the source of social equality/reform episodes?  This show does alot with Moclus, too.  This is the third episode out of seven that is focused on Bortus and/or Moclus.
  • Talla is “more confused than uncomfortable”.  I kind of wonder about that.  I mean some guy just broke into her apartment to tell her he liked her.  Its a little creepy and Cullins like. Also she seemed really uncomfortable when she first arrived.
