Review:
Our first Mirror Universe episode. I’m odd and I’m not a big fan of the mirror universe. Mostly having to do with the way its portrayed in DS9. There tends to be a sexualization to the episodes that comes across, to me, as vaguely creepy.
This episode does not seem to have the same issue, although it does have some problematic elements, but its more the age in which it was created. The premise of the episode is interesting though and I think overall it’s a good episode.
During a beam-up, a accident occurs that causes the away team to arrive in a parallel universe. The Federation is now The Empire, and the morality and ethics are the opposite as well.
I’m fairly neutral on this episode. It has a interesting concept, but I have a bias against the Miror universe and it sours the episode for me.
Interesting Notes:
- Directed by Marc Daniels
- Written by Jerome Bixby
- Inspiration for many episodes in the future series.
Pros:
- Uhura pulling the knife on Sulu when he doesn’t take her no.
Cons:
- Sulu being interested in Uhura
- I’m a little tired of the female characters going “Captain, I’m scared.” Or a variation thereof. On one hand they should be free to say it, but there always seems to be one woman who needs Kirk’s pep talk. They have done this to Uhura twice.
