The purpose of this blog

The purpose of this blog originally was just going to be either a writing journal or a school reading journal.  And in a sense, it will remain that.  However I am going to redefine it now.

This blog will be my writing, book reviews, movie review etc.  I’m going to try and keep my personal life restricted to my LJ so you don’t have to worry about me rambling on about someone else and their idiocy (unless its about a character in a book).  However, I may on occasion write about something non-writing or reading.  Like perhaps a ramble on a certain research element.

Some of you might not know, but I have another blog here on WordPress called Graphic Mirage.  It is a graphic design/tech blog, but its not a super-tech blog.  Basically I talk about things and hope people talk back.  Sometimes I ask questions, sometimes I give answers, and alot of times I just talk about things that I like in that realm.  Feel free to follow it and leave comments. Its interactive.

So is this blog.  I see this as a communication medium, not just somewhere where you read what I have to say.  If I don’t like a book and you do, feel free to put your opinion up.  Just be polite about it.  I can delete comments if they insult me or the other commentators (and telling me I’m wrong is not an insult.  I’m talking about calling me or someone else a name that might require your mother putting soap in your mouth).

I am also doing a 50 Books a year thing (book it?) so if you have any suggestions for books for me to read, I’m happy to take them.  Right now I am reading The Harry Potter series (attempting to actually read them all, except 7 and read them in order.  Unlike the last time where I read 1 & 3)  and The Rowan, the first in the Tower series.  I have already read the book, but its been at least a year, if not two since I did and I am quite enjoying it and realizing things I never noticed before.

Possible Fic Openers

Found a fortune cookie the other day that seemed perfect to open a chapter with, kind of like how some start it off with a lyric.  Here is a list so I don’t forget them.

And I am still Alive

Sorry for the non-updates.  I’ve been so busy in school that haven’t had time to post anything here.  But alot has happened since I last updated.   School’s over, I wrote a small novella that I’m currently working on revising.  I’m partispating in a virtual season, I have updated my Deviantart account with photographs and have several art projects on my to do list.

I’m currently working on a review of the Pride and Prejudice movies.  Lets hope that goes well.

More weekly readings…

The Story of an Hour – Kate Chopin

A woman finds out her husband is dead, having been in a train accident, and at first weeps but then goes to her bedroom to have a moment of joy at the fact that she is free.  But when she returns downstairs, it turns out her husband isn’t quite as dead as she thinks, she has a heart attack and dies.

The Yellow Wallpaper – Charlotte Perkins Gilman

A woman and her husband take a three month vacation after she has a nervious breakdown.  She becomes obsessed with the wall paper and the woman she sees behind it.

Hills like White Elephants – Ernest Hemmingway.

A girl and a man are sitting at a bar looking at some hills that are white.  I really don’t understand the story at all.  (on a side note, I thought of Malcolm and Hoshi while reading it)

Distint View of a Minaret – Akufa Rifaat

A woman is lying in bed with her husband and ‘thinks of paris’ before showering and doing her morning rituals.  She comes back to give her husband his coffee, and finds him dead.

Yet another story that makes you go huh? at the end.

Yellow Woman – Leslie Marmon Siko

A woman has an affair with a stranger, who relates thier relationship to that of the myth of the Yellow Woman.

Say Yes – Tobias Wolf

A woman and her husband argue over wither they would have been married if she had been Black instead of white.  I have no idea what happened at the end, so I’m pretty sure I got that question wrong on the quiz

Weekly Readings (which so far I have failed at)

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge – Ambrose Bierce

A man is executed over a stream from a railroad bridge.  In the few seconds before he dies, he imagines his escape.  However at the end, he’s hanging from the bridge.

A Rose for Emily – William Faulkner

An woman in town dies, and the town comes to her funneral, more out of curiousity then anything else.  A Colonel had gave her freedom of taxes, so the town was trying to get her to pay her taxes, while also giving rid of a smell emitting from her house.  They find out she had kept the corpse of her boyfriend in her house.

The Things They Carried  – Tim O’Brien

Discusses what several men in a group carry with them.  Jimmy Cross carries not-quite Love letters from a girl named Martha whom he daydreams about, Dave Jenson – toothbrush, dental floss, soap, extra socks, foot powder, Ted Lavender (before he was shot, apparently, in the head outside Than ke) carried pot and tranquilizers, Henry Dobbs extra food,  Michell Sanders – comdons, Norman Bowker – diary, Rat Kiely – comic books, Kiowa- new testament, hatchett,

They all carried several pounds worth of equipment and safety gear, armaments, and extra clothes in case of weather change.  What they carry changes with the mission.

oh, and Ted Lavender carried this before he was shot in the head outside Than Khe on his way back from peeing.

The Darling – Anton Chekhov

A girl named Olenka  falls in love and then marries the manager of a town theater.  They do well together though she is happy and he is constantly despairing of the rain and how it will make them poor.  Then he dies while on a trip to moscov.  For months she mourns, till she met Vassily, a timber merchant and after a few days falls in love.  Six years later Vassily dies and she becomes fixated on the Vet who would keep her company while Vassily was away on trade trips.  He however leaves her to join the army.  She becomes thin and worn and has no opinions.   He returns several years later with his wife and son, saying he has reunited with them>  She offers them her house, and fixates on showing love to the couple’s young son Sasha.

Happy Endings – Margaret Atwood

A story about endings to the phrase’ ‘John and Mary meet".’  A is a happy ending, b-e are various endings of both happy and sad (including one that doesn’t even include John and Mary.)  F is the author basically saying the only true ending is “John and Mary die’.  (actually gives me an idea…)

Fandom Pet Peeves

Over the last couple of days I have come across story after story where the author doesn’t seem to understand one thing.  Author Notes should not be in sections.  They should be together, either at the top or the bottom of the story.  You can have notes at the top and at the bottom, but not through out the actual story.  It pushes the reader out of the story.

The story section of your fic should not include author notes, author commentary, or author questions.    The header of your story should not be longer then the story itself.  if you have that much to explain, you have more writing to do.

Sorry about this rant but it is becoming a pet peeve of mine to be reading a story and suddenly have the author talking to me as if I was watching a commentary.  If you really want me to know it, place it with your header or footer.  Don’t interrupt story time.

Another thing that gets me?  When people post that they won’t update untill so many people review.  Its not going to happen.  That just makes people want to run.  Your fic is not a good hostage.  If people are going to review, they will.  Asking for reviews is ok, especially if your making sure people know you want con-crit. But saying you won’t post till people review might make your reviews go down.

As yet untitled NCIS/SG-1 fic prologue

Author’s Notes:  This is a rough draft.  I plan on writing more into this.  Especially at the end.  Delve more into Nicholas, and in particular his relationship with Tony.  Katarina;s name may also change.  She’s dead (I’m trusting Gibbs and not Tony on this one, because the writers didn’t keep a correct way of wiether she was alive or not.)

Spoilers: All 10 seasons of SG-1, first 5 seasons of NCIS, particularly seasons 1-2.   Nothing heavily episode related, but NCIS and SG have things that are said in them that filter through out the whole show (like people teasing Tony about the Transsexual he made out with)

Basically, right now know that Vala and Cameron are at the SGC, as is Sam.  Sam & Jack are involved in a serious relationship.   Paul Davis has been promoted to Lt. Colonel and is currently helping Kate set up an investigative section of Homeworld Security.

Ziva and Tony are kinda together.  They aren’t holding each other to any sort of commitment and both are thinking of ending it, amicably.

Jenny did not die.  So ignore anything about the season 5 finale or later.  Kate did not die, but she hasn’t been working at NCIS since her attack (where she did die, but they were able to bring her back with the technology the SGC had available).

Umm….yeah, thats basically it I think.  If not I’ll revise this later on.  Proabably when this becomes a publishable –at-an-archive stage.

The problem with stories that go on in your head is..

That you get scenes that are totally not part of the story being planned.

Like I have this scene in my head of Kat (who, given that I see her being a little like Abby, might actually in fact be like the person I know as Kat) wanting a pet Iguana but Tony saying no (and Kate laughing her butt off about.).  Now she just wants a pet, so she moves on to other animals trying to find one that her parents will allow (and that their apartments will allow).  And during a case, there is a dog that has to go up for adoption because its owner died and it has no one to take of it, so Tony decides that its the perfect pet for Kat, since its a older dog whose been around alot of people, and for some odd reason it just hits him as the right thing to do.  And Kat is very happy about it.

But given the story takes place when Kat is 2 and not 6 or 7 like she would be in the scene above, it gets annoying when that is the scene that’s running through your head.

Why can’t it be the scene where Jack and Gibbs argue over jurisdiction?

Ooooo…Jack and Gibbs in the elevator conference room.  Discussing whose got what rights and coming to an agreement……

Blog stats

Its interesting, looking at my blog when I’m not logged in.  How I appear to be posting less in Febuary (or at least on less days), and I have a tendency to not post on Sundays (probably trying to quickly do my homework).

I got a random search engine hit the other day for “clarine seymour abortion”  and I’m not quite sure what in this journal would bring someone who was searching for that.  Must have been The Dark Side report.

Highest views was 23 in one day, but I’m averaging out at 1 per day.  If that.  There have been a couple of days of no viewing. Whenever I post on my LJ that I updated I get more views.  Maybe I should promote this more.  Although then again, do I really want to?

This week I shall be posting more.  Probably a couple times a day.  I will be updating with book reviews, short story summaries, and more on the NCIS fic that I am currently working on.

I go where my muse goes.  I wish she would allow me to write something for Johnny/Frankie (I nearly lost my claim), or for one of the backlog of stories I owe
